Stuart Hobson Middle School Builders Club: Focuses on Haiti

The Stuart Hobson Middle School Builders Club is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Capitol Hill. This school, with 400 students from fifth grade through eighth grade, is located near Union Station on Capitol Hill, Washington, D. C. The Builders Club, 8th graders, is sponsored by Ms. Sandra Jenkins. The club was ready to begin preparing its annual Valentine's Dance when a more serious situation presented itself: the Haiti earthquake. Taking up the challenge, the students organized themselves to visit classrooms throughout the building to collect donations for the children of Haiti. The Grand Total raised was $1,175!!! The sixth graders contributed most as they sponsored a bake sale to raise their funds. The sixth grade donated $595.58 as a result. 8th grader Affrika Clarke brought in 1,065 pennies. Highest student donations were Mariah Stewart with $105, Kristell George with $46.14, Affrika Clarke with $39.74, and Andres Ringer with $34. Staff and friends contributed $253.90.
