DAK/Holiday
Coalition Coat Drive
by Kate Richards
The Dulles Area Kiwanis
Club, in cooperation with the Loudoun County Community
Holiday Coalition, collected coats, which were distributed
to families in need in October. Since 1996, the Community
Holiday Coalition has helped thousands of Loudoun County
families have a wonderful holiday season. This year
the Dulles Area Kiwanis was pleased to provide support
for this effort by coordinating the community coat
drive. DAK collected over 600 coats during the coat
drive. The distribution of coats was held over the
first two weekends in October and over 500 coats were
distributed to people in need. Coats left over from
the coat drive were donated to LINK, a Dulles area
organization that also helps families in need in the
Dulles area, for their November coat drive. We had
key clubbers from two area Key clubs (Potomac Falls
and Stonebridge) help on the last day of distribution.
DAK is looking forward to coordinating the community
coat drive next year.

Many individuals join Kiwanis clubs specifically because we are an international
organization with a global mission-that lofty goal of changing
the world one child and one community at a time. To this
point, with a few notable exceptions, our Capital District
clubs seem to have focused on local efforts directed toward
helping our own children and communities. This is commendable,
but it does not address the incredible needs of children
worldwide...Accordingly,
our District Committee on International Understanding has
decided to pursue a new approach
to achieving our global mission. We have selected Africa because its needs are great and most of us know extremely
little about this part of the world...
